The star labelling programme, introduced by the BEE, aims to evaluate and enhance the energy efficiency of the electrical appliances used in India. In compliance with the star labelling programme, some items are subject to mandatory BEE registration while others only require voluntary BEE registration.

Electrical appliances are given a star rating based on how effectively they use energy. The best energy efficiency is found in five-star items, while the lowest energy efficiency is found in one-star ones. The star ratings serve as a resource for end users to evaluate the energy efficiency of the appliances and serve as a direction for them as they select the most cost-effective appliance to purchase.

Mandatory and Voluntary BEE Registration

Certain electrical appliance manufacturers are required to register their products with the BEE in order to be offered in the Indian market. Products like Room Air Conditioners, Distribution Transformer, LED Lamps, Electrical Geysers, Colour TV, etc. comes under mandatory BEE Registration.

The electrical appliances under the voluntary BEE Registration scheme include Induction Motors, Agricultural Pump Sets, Deep freezers, Washing Machine, Microwave Ovens and office equipments like scanners, printers, computers, etc.

BEE Registration for Room Air Conditioners

Room air conditioner producers are required by law to seek BEE certification before releasing their products in the Indian market as room air conditioners fall under the mandatory category for BEE registration. Monitoring and improving the energy efficiency of room air conditioners and tracking the growth of the producers in this field are made easier with the help of BEE registration. The IS 1391 Part 1, Part 2 (Schedule 3) standard is the basis for the BEE Registration for room air conditioners. The aforementioned standard is applicable to single-phase and unitary split air conditioners with a cooling capacity of 11 kW and vapour compression. Evaporative coolers and cooling systems with multiple indoor units, each of which has separate control, are examples of cooling systems that do not use vapour compression and are not covered by the BEE scheme.

Room air conditioner producers must adhere to specific procedures in order to receive the necessary registration, as BEE registration is mandatory. However, the producer of Indian origin must designate an authorised signatory to complete the BEE registration processes before getting a BEE registration. A signature and an AIR, or authorised Indian representative, must be chosen by a foreign manufacturer. Such a foreign manufacturer may designate an Indian corporation or company representative who works there as its Authorised Indian Representative.

Conclusion

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency Registration, also known as the BEE Registration, was established by the Ministry of Power, Government of India, in accordance with the Energy Conservation Act, 2001[1], with the goals of reducing India's overall energy intensity and improving the country's energy usage. Room air conditioners are required to be mandatorily registered in accordance with the BEE-prescribed standards as part of the star labelling programme that the Bureau of Energy Efficiency initiated. A manufacturer, trader, or importer of room air conditioners willing to use such items in the marketplace should do so since the star ratings enable end users evaluate the energy efficiency of the appliances and serve as a reference in helping them select the most cost-effective appliance.
